Opportunity! You Are Needed!
The Cross Pointe ESL Ministry is recruiting volunteers to teach English to local immigrants. Currently we are expanding the number of classes and need more volunteers. If you are interested in being a part of this vital ministry, please contact the Missions Office for details at 678.812.4500 or missions@crosspointechurch.com.

What Is ESL?
ESL, or English as a Second Language, is much more than teaching others to read and speak English fluently. Consider the following:

  • People who are a part of the minority ethnic groups in our population are growing 600% faster than the population as a whole.
  • There are representatives from every nation of the world now present in North America--and nearly all of those nations are represented in the greater Atlanta area.
  • Atlanta has the largest population of refugees--immigrants who have fled persecution, war or unrest in their home countries--than any other city in the United States.
  • Ethnic peoples are now a majority in 25 of the largest cities in North America, making up 61% of Chicago, 73% of New York, and 78% of Los Angeles.
  • The United States is the third largest Hispanic nation in the world and soon will replace Spain, currently in second place behind Mexico.

Many of these new immigrants arrive with a huge need: the need to learn English. We can meet that need and reach them with the Gospel through English as a Second Language (ESL) schools. Churches across the nation use ESL as an outreach to local non-English-speaking immigrants.

Do I Need to Know How to Teach?
You do not need teaching experience or formal training to be a part of the ESL Ministry (though, of course, that's helpful). We use a tried-and-true curriculum to walk students through learning English. One of our study texts is the English version of the Bible. As students learn English, we are also exposing them to God's Word, and allowing the Word to work in their lives as they read--God often uses this experience to draw students toward a relationship with Him.

The qualifications for volunteering are simple: a willingness to help, an open heart and mind, ready to learn along with your students, patience, and the time required to be a part of leading or facilitating an ESL class.
